After years of putting this drama aside, I’ve decided to write a mini- review enjoy!
Itazura na Kiss was first aired on October 1996, which makes it the oldest adaptation of the manga story. However, since the manga wasn’t completed till Sep 1999 when the mangaka suddenly passed away, this version didn’t have a chance to follow through with the story of Kotoko and Naoki’s married life. Unlike the other adaptations, this story focused mainly on Kotoko and Naoki in high school and ended the show while they were in still in college. This does not, however, take away from the story.
Sato Aiko and Kashiwabara Takashi bring the “funny” and the “real”
By depicting a slightly different variation to the manga, the Jdrama Itazura Na Kiss offers a new melodramatic twist in the telling of the love story between the scatter-brained Kotoko and the shrewdly intelligent Naoki. Sato Aiko, who plays Kotoko, is over the top in her performance portraying a shrill and crass female lead, which the audience struggles to become attached to. However, her likability shines through as the story delves deeper into the lovers relationship.
In its faults and discrepancies, the show does become slightly painful to watch but the humor and likability of the lead performers are what hold’s it all together. With that being said, the show’s variances to the original story also makes for a good, comparative storyline.
All in all I give this show a 6/10.
