Chapter 48

Finally dressed properly with a quick wardrobe change, Mike enters the party smoothly. He scans around the beautifully decorated banquet room and exhales his nerves. He stared straight in front of him and focused his attention onto the brightly lit, curtain laced, stage where Peter and Rainie were to exchange rings from. Right in the middle of the stage, would lay the engagement rings displayed on a soft and red velvet pillow on top of a pedestal. This was it; all Mike had to do was take the rings and leave. All he needed to do was, wait for Ariel’s cue.

“Get the rings and get out, get the rings and get out,” he recited to himself.

As he slid over from one table to the next in a mysterious fashion, Ron took noticed and decided to have Mike come over for a chat.

“MIKE!” Ron suddenly called out.

“Huh?!” Mike jumped up from the shock of being caught.

“Mike,” Ron smiled lightly. “How are you my boy?”

“Oh…I’ve been better,” Mike joked a bit, recovering from the scare. “Uh…uh…How you like the service so far?”

“Stunning,” he answered. “Absolutely stunning. I knew you wouldn’t let me down.”

“I’m glad. I hope you continue to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed preparing these meals,” Mike smiled. “Now if you’ll excuse me…”

“Mike, come with me,” Ron said abruptly. “I need to talk to you, man to man.”

So much for the plan. Ariel’s cue had to wait a bit longer.

Mike and Ron both make their way near a secluded area of the banquet room, near the balcony. So close to fulfilling his mission and Ron had to barge in like that! Mike shuffled his body a bit from nerves as Ron put his hands in his pockets as he spoke calmly.

“As you know I have never been a man that has many regrets,” he began. “But…I must say that I regret treating you the way I did the last time we met.”

“Hmm?” Mike raised an eyebrow.

Ron continued. “It was no way a man of my stature to behave. Surely you must know I only had the interest of my daughter in mind. Anything that has to do with my little girl…well you know how it goes; a man can only do so much to protect the only one he has left. And Rainie is all I have left.”

“Oh, yes, I know,” Mike smiled. “But, if you don’t mind me saying, a woman needs to have something more than just security in her life; she needs risks, dangers and fears to make her feel complete; as we all do.

“Well, that I do agree with,” Ron laughed a bit. “Bottom line is I wish for your forgiveness and I will do anything to honor your loyalty for my catering wishes from now on.”

“You mean,” Mike began. “You would do anything??”

“That’s what I said, right?” he chuckled halfheartedly.

“Is this like, collateral?” Mike frowned. “Because you feel guilty, you’ll do anything I want?”

“Well not everything,” he warned. “Just when it comes to business.”

“Oh,” Mike sighed disappointedly.

Ron sighed deeply and smirked at Mike’s foolish antics.

“You’ll stop at nothing will you?” he ambiguously asked.

“What?” Mike asked.

Ron only shook his head and chuckled as he patted Mike on the shoulder.

“You know you remind me a lot of Rainie,” Ron smirked.

“Really?” Mike smiled back. “How so?”

“Both of you are mischievous, naïve and very peculiar; if only I understood what was going through in your heads…”

Suddenly a scream shocked the audience into frenzy and Ron held onto Mike with a forceful grip.

“What was that?” Mike called out.

“I-I’m not sure,” Ron answered.

Peering into the crowd, Ron and Mike stood in awe as Peter forcefully kissed a waitress.

“Peter!” Ron yelled. “What on Earth are you doing?!”

“Ugh, Get OFF of me!” yelped the waitress, as she pushed Peter onto the floor.

Dragging his frail and wobbling body off the floor, Peter laughs and giggles his way up as Ron approaches him. Clearly he had been drinking and his actions were exaggerated.

“What are you doing!” he yelled again.

“What does it look like?” Peter drunkenly responded. “I’m having the time of my freaking life!”

Looking a bit lost, Mike searched for Rainie and only saw her staring at Peter with a sickened look. He mouths the words “what’s happening?” to her and she only shook her head. This wasn’t part of the plan.

“Peter, this is no way for a man to behave in any way!” Ron shouted. “Apologize to the lady now! In fact, apologize to my family, especially Rainie, at once!”

“You know what OLD MAN!” Peter spat. “I don’t need to listen to you! Once I marry your daughter…wait, what were we talking about?”

“Look at yourself Peter!” Ron said angrily. “You’re behaving like a fool!”

“A fool?! A fool!?! HA! A fool in LOVE perhaps,” Peter continued. “In love with whatever the hell was in that damn glass of wine!”

“How dare you kiss another woman?!” Ron infuriately responded.

“Enough!” Peter shouted. “Time to place the finger in the ring HAHAH, I mean the ring on the finger! Rainie! Where you at!?!”

“Huh?” Rainie said taken aback.

Peter suddenly made his way towards the rings, wobbling and smiling like an idiot; ready to make a bigger moron out of himself than he already has. Mike stood stiffly; the rings were the plan! Peter was ruining the whole entire set up!

“Peter, get away from the rings!” Ron shouted. “It’s not time yet!”

“C’mon! This is an engagement party…” he stumbled across the room. “Time to get engaged!”

As the intoxicated Peter took the rings off the gold mantle on which they were placed, the crowd gasped in shock. No one has ever been so rude as to take the rings so forcedly unless it was the priest. Quickly, Peter grabbed Rainie’s hand to put the ring on her finger but Rainie pulled her hand back.

“NO!” she shouted at the top of her lungs.

“Get away from her!” Mike shouted as he ran in front of her.

“Hey!” Peter mumbled with frowned eyes, stumbling before Mike.

“Don’t you touch my Rainie,” Mike seriously remarked. “I mean it! I won’t let you touch her!”

“What are you talking about, she’s my fiancé!” Peter hiccupped as he lunged himself forward towards Mike.
Mike yelled back again. “I won’t let you touch her! I won’t let you have her! I won’t let you take her away from me!”

“Stop screaming!” Peter frowned, still as much inebriated as before. “Ok, in a count of three I’m going to close myeyes and give a big kiss to Rainie! If you happen to come across that kiss, then so be it! One…”

“He’s not joking is he?” Mike said to Rainie.

“Doesn’t look like it,” Rainie cringed.

“He’s at two! What are we going to do Rainie?!?!” Mike panicked as he still protected her.

“I don’t know, do something Mike!” she pushed him.

“What do you want me to do?!” Mike shouted back.

“Get out of the way, Mike!” Ariel scolded at him as she pushed both Rainie and Mike onto the floor.

As Peter lunged forward, he grabbed onto Ariel and was seconds away from kissing her. Her heart pounded quickly and she didn’t know what to do except cover her face with her hands. Just as he was about to kiss her, she heard a high pitched scream…
