Chapter 11

Entering the nearby hospital, the Lieutenant walks up to the nurses and he asks them if he could visit Mike in the recovery ward. He needed to see him again, as the new disclosures in the case had just opened up. Even though Mike would not be able to hear him, he still spoke to him near his bed. As he enters the room, he sees a familiar face sitting next the bed; Mike’s fiancé, Rainie.

“Hey,” he said softly as he lightly squeezing her shoulder.

“HEY!” she whispered in amazement. “I haven’t seen you around lately.”

“I’ve been busy,” he said bluntly.

“With the case?” She lowered her head to meet his.

“Yeah,” he exasperatedly sighed.

“How’s it coming along?” Putting a hand on his shoulder, she furrowed her eyes to see the pain in his face.

“Slow, but its coming…” he sighed. “Rain, can I talk to you for a minute?”

“What do you call what we’re doing now?” she said laughing.

“I mean…this is going to be hard for me to say,” Joe winced.

“Sure,” she said a little worried.

“I think I found Ariel Lin,” he said softly and quietly.

“What?” she said in stunned curiosity.

“Yeah, and that’s not even the worst part,” he said with a smirk.

“I know this is impossible but…please, please tell me anything about the case,” Rainie said desperately.

“Rain, I already told you about Ariel, what else so you want to know?” he said frustrated.

“I want to know everything,” she excitedly answered.

“You know I can’t give you any information on the case,” he said, shaking his head. “It’s against government policy.”

“If you have any ounce of humanity in you, you will tell me why my fiancé lies here with an IV jammed up his freaking arm!” she threatened.

“…Fine!” he said angrily. He knew Mike would be mad, but what could he do? He was staring at Rainie’s tearful expression not wanting to cause her anymore pain.

“During our residency in the Taipei police force, Mike, Alex and I had been working on a specific case. This case had never been really looked on, only because it wasn’t a murder but a suicide. You can’t convict anyone when the criminal commits a crime to kill himself. I never truly understood why Mike was so engrossed with the case until he told us. The case revolved around Ariel’s father,” he said to her.

“Her father?” she asked

“Yeah,” he sighed

“But how?” furrowing her brows, Rainie continued to interject.

“He had committed suicide a couple years after she was born.”

“Oh no,” she gasped, putting a hand over her mouth.

“Mike accidentally stumbled onto the case when he tried to search for her a couple years back. Instead he found a news article about her father’s death and the “treasure” he had reportedly left behind for his family. However, Ariel and her mother had never seen the treasure because they lived poor all their lives. We tried finding her through her his death by scouring all of Taiwan, asking people whether or not they have heard of such treasure.”

“And…nothing happened?” she asked taking every word in.

“Nobody had heard anything. Apparently the family didn’t really have many close friends.”

“So what about Alex?” she asked grimly

“For Alex, this was an opportunity for fortune. He became obsessed over the treasure and since Mike had only told them a small part of the case, he grew a loathing for Mike’s selfish behavior. Therefore, I guess when he found Ariel he wanted to manipulate her into telling more about her father. Having her father die at such a young age, I’m sure all she gave him was just a hard time,” he finally revealed

“So she was used by Alex all this time?” she asked.

“Apparently,” he nodded. “And she doesn’t seem like she has a clue about what just happened.”

“Where is she now?” Rainie was taking in the story with short breathes.

“Probably roaming the streets, like a lost child,” he shrugged. “Alex tried to finish her off, but was stupid enough to leave before he could confirm her death.”

“So what are you going to do now?” she asked.

“The only thing I can do; I have to find her and bring her back to the station. I mean it IS her case,”

“I know…but it just seems so unfair for her, ya know?” she said.

Joe gave another exhausted sigh. “I know.”

Leaving the hospital, the lieutenant could only think about how he was going to execute his plan. How was he supposed to find her now, he thought?
